Architectural technologists turn building ideas into safe, practical and sustainable designs using technical and construction expertise

As an architectural technologist, you'll use the technology of architecture to help design buildings that are safe, practical, inclusive and sustainable. With experience and Chartered Architectural Technologist (MCIAT) status, you may lead projects from the initial brief through to completion.

You may work on new buildings, refurbishments, alterations, reuse projects and other construction schemes.

What does an architectural technologist do?

As an architectural technologist, you'll need to:

  • administer building contracts, inspect work on site and prepare relevant certificates and project documentation
  • assess design risks and advise on regulatory, environmental and contractual requirements
  • assess how design decisions affect a building's function, performance, safety, accessibility and sustainability
  • contribute to planning applications, applications for building regulations approval and other statutory approval processes
  • evaluate completed buildings and advise on maintenance, refurbishment, retrofit, reuse and deconstruction
  • identify and interpret surveys, site information and technical reports needed to support the design
  • lead or contribute to the detailed design process and coordinate information from architects, engineers and other specialists
  • meet clients and other professionals to agree project requirements and develop the brief
  • prepare and present technical design proposals using CAD, BIM and 3D modelling software
  • produce technical drawings, specifications and construction details for materials, components and building systems.

Architectural technologist salary

  • Typical starting salaries for a graduate/junior technologist range from £23,000 to £30,000.
  • With experience, technologists typically earn between £30,000 and £45,000.
  • Senior architectural technologists earn in the region of £42,000 to £60,000.

Salaries vary according to your experience, location, professional status, specialist knowledge and level of responsibility. Higher salaries are generally available in London and in roles involving complex projects, team leadership or practice management.

Employers may also offer benefits such as pension contributions, bonuses, professional membership fees and flexible or hybrid working.

Typical working hours for architectural technologists

Working hours are usually 9am to 5pm, although you may need to work longer hours or occasional weekends when project deadlines are approaching. Depending on your employer and the type of project, some remote or hybrid working may be possible, alongside time in the office, on site and in client meetings.

You may work alone or as part of a wider project team. Most work is office based, but site visits are common and can involve travelling to collect information, attend meetings and review progress. Site work takes place in different weather conditions, and you'll need to follow health and safety requirements, including wearing protective clothing where needed.

Freelance and self-employed architectural technologists may charge higher hourly rates than salaried employees, but they need to manage their own holiday, sickness cover, tax and pension arrangements. Part-time work, career breaks and international opportunities may be possible depending on your employer, experience and professional status.

How to become an architectural technologist

There are several routes into architectural technology, including university study, an apprenticeship or progression from an architectural technician or related construction role.

The most direct academic route is an honours degree in architectural technology or architectural design and technology. Other relevant subjects may include:

  • architectural engineering
  • architecture
  • building or construction studies
  • built environment
  • civil or structural engineering
  • construction management
  • surveying.

Choosing a course accredited by the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT) can make the professional qualification process more straightforward, as the course has been assessed against the Institute's educational standards. You'll still need to gain relevant experience and demonstrate the required professional competence to become a Chartered Architectural Technologist.

A postgraduate qualification isn't essential, although Masters courses are available if you want to develop specialist knowledge or convert from a related subject. CIAT accredits both honours and Masters degree programmes.

You may also be able to train through an apprenticeship. In England, architectural technologist is one of the job roles covered by the Level 6 Design and Construction Management degree apprenticeship, which typically takes four years. Apprenticeship arrangements and availability differ across the UK, so check CIAT and the relevant national apprenticeship service for current opportunities.

Another option is to start with an HNC, HND or foundation degree in architectural technology, construction or building studies and gain experience in an architectural technician or similar role. It's also possible to enter without a formal architectural technology qualification, although you will need to demonstrate the necessary knowledge, skills and experience as you progress.

CIAT Student membership is free for eligible students and apprentices studying at Level 3 or above. After completing your studies, you may be able to upgrade to Associate or affiliate status and work towards the MCIAT professional qualification.

You'll need to have:

Architectural technology work experience

Relevant work experience is highly valued by employers, as it helps you to understand how an architectural or multidisciplinary design practice operates and how projects are handled.

Where can a career as an architectural technologist lead?

A key professional development step is becoming a Chartered member of CIAT. Before applying for Chartered status, you must be registered with CIAT as either an Associate member or affiliate. Depending on your qualifications and experience, you can then qualify through the MCIAT Professional Assessment or by completing the Professional and Occupational Performance (POP) Record.

For the Professional Assessment route, you'll submit evidence demonstrating the skills, knowledge, experience and professional behaviours set out in CIAT's Professional Standards Competency Framework, followed by a professional assessment interview. The POP Record provides a structured route through a series of underpinning-knowledge and performance units and also leads to a professional assessment interview.

Chartered Architectural Technologists are recognised as Chartered professionals within the built environment sector.

You'll continue to build your technical, design, digital and project management skills on the job. Employers may support short courses, in-house training and external CPD, including learning linked to sustainability, regulations, inclusive design, specification writing and construction technology.

As your experience grows, you may progress into senior architectural technologist, project lead, design manager, BIM or digital specialist, retrofit specialist, façade specialist, principal designer, practice manager or director roles. You could also move into teaching, research, consultancy or self-employment.
