If you're looking to study a course at a further education (FE) college in the UK, here's an example showing you the kinds of things you can highlight in your personal statement
College personal statement example
I am applying to study A-levels in mathematics, physics, and geography at your college, as I aim to study a degree in construction management at university. These subjects fit my interest in working in construction and also allow me to specialise in civil engineering if I choose to. Construction involves a lot of maths, whether that's designing, planning, costing, ordering materials or setting out to start building. If you don't get these things right, it can end up costing more money. It's important that my maths calculations are accurate. Currently, I am predicted a grade 6 in my GCSE.
Physics is very useful as you need to understand forces and how different materials, such as concrete, brick, or steel, react. For instance, if concrete isn't mixed correctly, it may weaken a building or bridge, and this could cause collapse, injuring people. This also applies to the temperature of materials contracting and expanding due to cold and heat. With the UK needing to become greener, physics can help with types of insulation and energy efficiency by using more sustainable materials, such as engineered wood and renewable energy sources for heating.
Geography is my third choice A-level, which will help with climate change. It's good to know what will be the best way to construct buildings in the future. Learning about landscape systems and how they have changed over time, how globalisation affects the way we live, work, build in our physical environment, and regeneration, which is what we are having to do in parts of the UK.
In addition to the practical skills I learnt at school and during my work experience, I worked with a construction company as part of my work experience. I liked working with others and asking questions about their roles. It helped me become more confident talking to different people. I enjoy working outside and doing physical work, as well as seeing the technical and professional roles within the business. Some of these included site manager, contracts manager, quantity surveyor, building/land surveyor, design, civil engineer, and project manager. The construction company said I could go back if I needed a work experience placement for college, which would help develop my construction knowledge and communication skills, and give me a better understanding of the construction industry. As my work experience was on a building site and in the office, I have completed some site inductions and learnt about health and safety.
I would be a good student for A-levels as my school attendance is excellent. In my work experience, I turned up on time every day, worked hard at labouring, shadowed construction managers in the office and on site, asking lots of questions about their jobs. I learned about how the different parts of construction fit together, including all the different trades.
One of my GCSEs is design technology, I chose this option as I enjoy designing, planning and making things as I am a hands-on person. At school, I have learned how to use some power tools and saws safely, as we have been trained in health and safety and the correct use of power tools in my course. I can cut, fasten, and design items made from wood and other materials, and I have used a 3D printer to create a resin key ring I designed. I am predicted to achieve a grade 7 for design technology.
I am predicted grade 6 for English language and literature, so hopefully I won't have to retake my GCSEs at college. I am good at writing assignments and researching different subjects. I do this for my personal building projects to find out the best techniques and timber to use. I like watching videos showing different job roles in construction management to learn more, and I also visit the Go Construct website. My science grade is a double GCSE and I am predicted 6 and 6, with geography being a grade 5. These grades should be enough for the entry requirements needed for all three A-levels.
In my free time, I enjoy making things. I have used AutoCAD to design wooden planters and a small bookcase. I like making things from wood for my family and improving my building skills. I have photos of everything I have designed and made to show teachers, universities, and employers, which I hope will help me secure a place on a construction management degree course, along with the additional work experience I plan to do.
At the weekends I play football for Anytown Utd, who are at the top of the league. I enjoy playing as it keeps me fit, and I like spending time with other players who have become my friends. Playing sports has helped build my teamwork and leadership skills while also keeping me fit. I think I would be a good manager, as I want to gain practical and management experience, so I can be the best I can.
In the future, my goal is to work as a manager in the construction industry. I am not sure at the moment if I want to be a site manager and manage my own building sites, or a civil engineer, as I have an interest in bridges. I am happy to travel for my job and don't mind what projects I work on, as long as I enjoy the work and can do a good job.
Thank you for considering my application.
