What inspired you to study a BSc in marketing with psychology?
Prior to university, I studied both business and psychology A-levels and was equally interested in both subjects, which meant it was a struggle to choose between them for a degree.
When I discovered that Lancaster University offered a joint-major BSc Marketing with Psychology degree, it immediately stood out as the perfect fit. What really inspired me was the unique opportunity to combine the strategic side of marketing with a deeper, more analytical understanding of consumer behaviour from psychology.
Why did you choose to study at Lancaster University?
I chose to study at Lancaster University partly because of its strong academic reputation, particularly in marketing where it ranks very highly in the UK at 8th (Complete University Guide 2026).
It's also one of the few universities that offers a combined degree in marketing with psychology, which greatly influenced my decision to apply as it aligned closely with my interests, and I knew that the niche degree would provide me with a more specialised and distinctive skillset for the future.
I was also greatly drawn to the campus environment, with its collegiate system creating a very strong sense of support and community, alongside its picturesque countryside setting, making it an ideal place to study.
Tell us about your course.
Throughout the degree, there is a mixture of core and optional modules in both marketing and psychology, allowing students to tailor their degree exactly to them. Examples of modules that I personally enjoyed include:
- Advanced Consumer Behaviour
- Social Psychology
- Strategic Marketing.
The third-year dissertation-style Market Research and Consultancy Project provided me with the valuable opportunity to gain hands-on marketing experience by working alongside a real client and tackling a live business challenge as a group, which greatly enhanced my market research and analytical skills.
Ultimately, the tailored degree has allowed me to gain a well-rounded understanding of both marketing and psychology, as well as practical experience that has strengthened my CV and helped me secure a relevant marketing internship.
How is your course assessed?
It is very varied across each module and between the marketing and psychology departments. Throughout my degree I have been assessed on:
- exams
- individual essays
- group assignments
- presentations
- reports
- seminar engagement.
The degree classification is based on a weighted average of grades from second- and third-year modules, allowing for less pressure in third year.
What do you enjoy about the course?
Definitely the exposure to a variety of content from studying two different subjects. It has kept the degree engaging and I have developed a well-rounded understanding, meaning I can practically apply psychological theories to real marketing contexts.
What are the challenges?
One challenge is that deadlines can sometimes fall around a similar time due to two different departments assigning work, which can be difficult.
However, Lancaster University offers great support and a simple extension request process that has assisted me whenever the workload has felt somewhat overwhelming.
Have you completed any placements or internships?
During my second year, I balanced a remote marketing assistant role for a local community interest company, Inclusive United CIC, where I mostly created social media content and supported the directors with administrative tasks.
Now, during my final year, I am completing a remote 12-month marketing and communications internship at Passle, which is a large firm providing AI technology software to top law firms. My role has involved editing, designing and publishing the global CMO Series Podcast and social media content, as well as executing my own LinkedIn campaigns.
Ultimately, I think that my degree set me up with the practical knowledge that has allowed me to successfully start my career within marketing.
What's your overall university experience been like so far?
I have greatly enjoyed my overall university experience and the independence that has come with it. Lancaster is a lovely area to live and has provided me with a strong education and meaningful friendships.
Are you a member of any clubs or societies?
During first year, I immediately joined Lancaster's Marketing and Advertising society, which hosted many insightful guest speakers within the marketing field and provided me with a community of people with shared interests.
It also allowed me to connect with others also studying BSc Marketing with Psychology, and we have continued to support one another and study together in third year.
How are you managing your finances as a student?
I budget plan and track my spending each week to ensure I do not fall behind. I also save regularly and the additional income from my internship helps me support my living costs.
What are your plans after graduation?
After graduating, I plan to continue to work for Passle as a marketing and communication intern and assist them as maternity cover. Following this, I hope to find a full-time graduate marketing role.
What kind of support have you received at Lancaster?
Lancaster has excellent support services and I have utilised the careers team, lecturers and my academic tutor whenever I have had any questions.
What advice would you give to others considering studying at Lancaster?
I would highly recommend Lancaster University to anyone and would advise others to take advantage of as many of the social and academic opportunities as they can, as getting involved in the community is a great way to feel settled.
