T Level graduate - Sophie Brindley

Sophie studied the T Level in Construction: Design, Planning and Surveying at MidKent College, securing an industrial placement with Gallagher Group, with the company later taking her on as a trainee assistant site manager

Why did you choose a T Level course?

I wanted a qualification that combined classroom learning with gaining hands-on experience. I originally attended a college open day to explore my next stage in education and considered a painting and decorating course.

When I met a T Level tutor, I realised that this qualification best suited my skills and abilities. The balance of classroom learning alongside practical on-site experience with an employer really appealed to me. I didn't want to sit in a classroom all day and felt that this route would better prepare me for a career in construction.

What was the application process like?

The application process for the T Level was really simple. I applied the night of my college open day and then received a conditional offer, based on my predicted GCSE results.

On GCSE results day, I found I'd passed all my exams, so I was able to attend the course I wanted.

The college held a taster day in July for all the new students. However, I was unable to make it, so I went to college on the first day, not knowing anybody. I was a bit nervous, but I made plenty of friends once we started learning.

It was great to see the range of students on the course, including one student who didn't get the GCSE results they needed the first time around. The college allowed them to resit their exams, and they really supported people who found classroom learning more challenging.

Why did you choose this course and institution?

It allowed me to study a subject I was passionate about while gaining real-world experience in the construction industry, combining classroom learning with at least 45 days of on-the-job experience.

The T Level structure gave me the opportunity to develop both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, which felt more relevant to my future career than other options.

How was the course assessed?

The assessment methods for the modules were varied, including not only written exams but also creative projects, allowing us to demonstrate our understanding in different ways.

We had core exams in both the first and final years, but before the exams, we regularly completed practice papers that our tutor marked and provided feedback on, helping us learn from any mistakes.

In the modules I completed, assessments included individual and group projects that required us to use laptops and produce drawings. In one module, for instance, we were tasked with drawing a floor plan for a project and then creating a 3D version using specialist software taught during the course.

What aspects of your industry placement did you most enjoy?

I completed my industry placement with Gallagher Group. The best part of my T Level was the industry placement, as I learned so much that a classroom cannot teach you.

During my placement, I had the opportunity to shadow site managers, engineers, and quantity surveyors, which gave me a broad understanding of different roles on site. I also managed document control for a specific project, which allowed me to be involved in the behind-the-scenes work that keeps a site running smoothly.

I enjoyed being part of a team where I felt valued and supported. I listened to conversations, attended meetings, and helped wherever I could to understand as much as possible. Being involved in a real construction project and seeing how different teams collaborate was a highlight and helped me develop my skills and confidence.

What aspects did you find the most challenging?

At the start of my placement, I felt nervous and shy, particularly as I was the only woman for some of the jobs I was placed on, and most of the time, the youngest on site too.

This was initially challenging, confidence-wise, being in a male-dominated environment, but over time, my confidence grew. Working at a female-owned business like Gallagher Group really helped me with this. I learned to assert myself, showcase my skills, and work alongside others as an equal, valuable team member.

What key skills did you learn through this experience?

Through my T Level and industry placement, I developed strong communication, practical and problem-solving skills. I learned to adapt to different work environments and improved my teamwork skills.

Balancing coursework with on-site learning helped me develop time management and organisational skills.

My confidence grew significantly throughout the placement, and I learned how to step out of my comfort zone and take on responsibility.

How was college life different to school?

College life was different because it allowed me to learn in a way that suited me. I had the opportunity to meet new people and experience learning both in the classroom and on-site. The independence and responsibility were greater, which helped me mature and develop personally.

What have you been doing since completing your T Levels, and how has your role developed?

I have continued working full time with my placement company, where I secured a position as a trainee assistant site manager. I was the first person in this role at the company. I was even more proud of this achievement as I was the first woman to hold this role. The support and opportunities I have received from my employer have been invaluable, and I am extremely grateful that they took me under their wing and allowed me to continue developing my skills.

I have since transitioned into an area document control role, where I visit a number of sites, manage their paperwork and data systems to ensure we are health and safety compliant and quality assured. I have already achieved other qualifications and certificates during my full-time role, and I continue to learn every day.

What are your career ambitions?

My long-term ambition is to become a property developer. This has been my goal since secondary school, and I see my current role as an important stepping stone towards that. In ten years, I hope to be running my own business and continuing to grow and develop within the construction industry.

What advice would you give to others considering T Levels?

  • Go for it due to the balance between classroom learning and on-site experience. Learning on my placement helped prepare me for the workplace in a way that classroom learning alone could not. I'm not best suited to classroom learning, so the placement really helped me visualise and learn so much more, using real-life examples and projects.
  • Make the most of your industry placement. Being on site allowed me to build my confidence, develop practical skills, and understand how the construction industry works in practice. Listening, asking questions and getting involved helped me learn as much as possible. Be like a sponge and absorb everything and anything, as the information you take in will benefit you in the future.
  • Take a risk and step out of your comfort zone. The T Level helped me grow personally and professionally, build my network, and access opportunities I never imagined. The experience can open doors and lead to possibilities you may not expect. I would never be where I am now without the T Level; it was the best decision I have ever made.
