T Level graduate - Pedro Alves

Pedro studied a T Level in Digital Support Services at Newbury College, which he used to secure a place on the BSc Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence (AI) at Buckinghamshire New University

Why did you decide to pursue a T Level course?

I chose a T Level qualification because its hands-on approach to learning and its application to real businesses really caught my attention. The combination of classroom lessons and real work experience - every T Level includes a 45-day industry placement - seemed more engaging.

What was the application process like?

It was simple and straightforward. I first researched the different T Level options. After applying online, I was invited for an informal interview, during which I discussed my interests in technology and what I hoped to gain from the course with a tutor. Everyone was really welcoming and explained how the course worked, which made me feel confident that it was the right fit for me.

Why did you choose this course and institution?

I was interested in the Digital Support Services T Level because it taught practical tech skills alongside real-world experience. Learning about topics such as cybersecurity and IT support, while gaining practical work experience, felt like a great option, as I knew it was the sector I wanted to work in.

Could you tell us a bit about your course?

The T Level enabled me to develop valuable skills both in the classroom and during my industry placement.

Through my lessons, I gained technical knowledge, including an understanding of computer hardware, threat detection, and troubleshooting IT problems.

During my industry placement in the IT department at Kennet School, I got to:

  • adapt to various situations
  • develop critical thinking abilities
  • enhance my teamwork and communication skills.

For me, the industry placement was so important, as it allowed me to gain experience that I know will be useful in the future. A highlight of my course was definitely setting up our own network with a server and switch, as it gave me a deep understanding of how these systems work in practice.

How was the course assessed?

It was assessed through a combination of:

  • written exams
  • practical tasks
  • employer-based projects.

This meant we weren't just memorising theory, we had to show that we could apply what we learned to real-world situations.

I liked that balance as it tested both knowledge and problem-solving skills. The practical assessments were particularly useful for building confidence and preparing for future IT work.

What aspects of your industry placement did you most enjoy?

Before I started the placement, I hoped to gain more knowledge about computers and IT in general, and the experience really helped me achieve that. My colleagues were very supportive and always willing to teach me new things whenever I was ready to learn.

The industry placement went so well that I was even offered a contracted summer job in the IT department before starting university, which gave me the opportunity to continue developing my skills and apply what I had learned in a real-world workplace environment.

Industry placements are important because they allow you to gain practical skills and understand how businesses work. They also help students to build connections and prepare for future job opportunities.

How was college life different to school?

College life felt much more independent than school. You're given more responsibility for your own work, and teachers encourage you to manage your own time and stay organised. I also found that everyone on the course shared similar interests, so it was easier to connect with people and work together on projects. It helped me prepare well for university life, where self-motivation and independence are even more important.

What have you been doing since completing your T Level?

After achieving my T Level, I decided to apply to university. As a T Level is broadly equivalent to three A-levels, I knew that university would be an option for me, and it was something I wanted to pursue.

I am currently studying computer science with a focus on AI at Buckinghamshire New University, where I am in my second year. I chose this course because I enjoy programming and am passionate about the field of AI. I felt that this course would provide the right knowledge and opportunities to learn more and improve my skills in this area.

What are your career ambitions?

My goal is to build a career in AI development or data science, utilising technology to create solutions that have a tangible impact.

What advice would you give to others considering T Levels?

  • Take the industry placement seriously. It's one of the best ways to gain first-hand experience, see how things work in real life, and build confidence.
  • Don't be afraid to ask questions or make mistakes. The course is designed to help you learn and grow, and you'll get the most out of it by being curious and proactive.
  • Just enjoy it. A T Level is a great opportunity to figure out what you like doing and what you're good at. If you put in the effort, you'll emerge with real experience, strong skills, and a much clearer idea of where you want to go next.
