Sam studied an LLB Law Degree at Sheffield Hallam University. He's now completing a Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) apprenticeship at law firm BRM
Why did you decide on a career in law?
I decided to study law as I believe it to be a very interesting subject, with its many different areas and complexities, which require detailed knowledge and expertise. I love to learn new things and there's always something new to learn within the field of law, which suits me very well.
In addition, careers in law are mostly aimed at helping lots of different people which is an aspect I enjoy.
Why did you opt for an apprenticeship?
I knew that an apprenticeship would provide me with valuable support as I stepped into the challenging role of working full time and studying for the SQE.
Why did you choose to complete the SQE with BRM?
In the final year of my studies I was granted the opportunity to conduct a placement with BRM, an opportunity which I made the most of. The placement allowed me to gain a role as one of their apprentice solicitors. I enjoyed myself thoroughly during my university placement, and I knew it was a place I would love to work when my studies concluded.
Now that I have that chance, I am very grateful and it has been lovely to see so many familiar faces welcoming me back, as well as meeting some new people.
Tell us about your SQE journey so far…
My first seat was Commercial Property. It took some getting used to as it's quite a busy department. At first it was quite overwhelming. This has made it even more rewarding as I've been able to work on different tasks and develop skills from university and during my placement.
I completed a variety of tasks such as drafting, particularly with leases in Commercial Property. Drafting tasks have helped me on my SQE journey, as it's made me more familiar with complex legal documents.
What elements have been the most enjoyable?
The most enjoyable aspect of my journey so far has been recognising my growth and development. When I look back at where I was at the start of my seat, I think there is a significant difference, and I look forward to developing more in my next seats.
What have you found challenging?
One of the challenges I've faced has been balancing work and studies. Preparing for an SQE teaching weekend takes a lot of studying, which I have to find time for - alongside time for myself and work at BRM. The key to overcoming this was to keep motivated and be organised.
This is my first full-time legal role, and it took time to adapt to the workload. Listening to feedback from my colleagues and working hard has improved my knowledge, making me more confident in the tasks I am given. This means I can take on more complex matters which I'm keen to do.
What did you learn through your Qualifying Work Experience (QWE)?
Commercial Property involves lots of different legal documents, which can often be very long and complex. Dealing with these on a regular basis has made me familiar with them and improved my understanding of the complex legal themes they deal with - making me more confident.
What support have you received throughout your SQE?
BRM is a very positive environment, and my colleagues are very helpful and friendly - making asking for assistance easy. This helped me settle into my first seat, as I could always ask for advice. They are happy to help - even though they are busy themselves.
How is your SQE training and exams funded?
I'm very fortunate to be part of the last cohort of Level 7 Apprenticeship students commencing my studies aged over 22. My fees have been met by Government funding.
When will you sit the exams and how are you feeling about this?
I will sit the SQE exams in July 2026. I am feeling confident about the exams as I have worked hard throughout my studies so far. Of course there are the expected nerves of sitting the exams, but I will continue studying and working hard to give myself the best chance of succeeding.
What are your career ambitions?
I'm currently working towards qualifying as a solicitor, and I'm aiming to get a lot of experience under my belt throughout the SQE. Ultimately, I'd like to see myself being a continuing part of BRM. Although I’m still unsure which area of law I'd like to qualify into, I'm hopeful I'll have made the decision after completing my four seats - but I anticipate it being a tough decision.
What advice can you give to others planning to take the SQE?
Take every opportunity that comes your way. As daunting as networking events seem, you never know who you may meet. They may be able to provide you with opportunities or support you towards reaching your goals.
I'd also advise getting work experience, even if it's for a short period. Any experience can have a big impact on your profile. Even if firms don't have any roles available at the time, it's likely that they will remember your efforts, and this could lead to opportunities in the future.
