Why did you decide on a career in law?
From a young age, I was drawn to the idea of helping people solve problems. Law stood out to me because it combines analytical thinking, problem solving and empathy, all skills I wanted to develop.
I was fascinated by how legal professionals play such a vital role in people’s lives, whether by:
- guiding them through complex matters like wills or property issues
- protecting their rights
- resolving disputes.
The more I learned about the profession, the more I realised it was a career where I could make a meaningful impact while continually challenging myself.
Why opt for an apprenticeship over other qualification routes?
I chose the apprenticeship route because I wanted to gain real-world experience while studying towards a qualification.
Learning from an experienced solicitor every day gives me invaluable insight into how the law works in practice and unlike the traditional university path, the apprenticeship provides immediate exposure to clients, cases and the realities of legal practice. It’s also a great way to qualify without the financial strain of university debt.
What did the application process involve?
I contacted Datalaw and registered my interest in their law apprenticeship. I then received a call from an apprenticeship coordinator who helped me start the application process.
After satisfying the entry requirements, I submitted the required documents and completed an online application and assessment.
Tell us about your apprenticeship with Datalaw.
The Level 7 solicitor, apprenticeship is structured over two years and six months, leading to qualification as a solicitor. I work full time as a paralegal while completing my legal studies and SQE preparation with Datalaw.
I’m assessed through exams, portfolio work, and by demonstrating key legal competencies in practice. The course covers all the modules of law, such as:
- business
- criminal
- property.
I receive constant support from tutors and mentors - it’s a great balance between theory and practice.
What kind of tasks do you complete on a typical day?
My days vary between practical and analytical tasks. Some days I focus more on research, while others are spent liaising with clients or handling administrative work.
Generally, my responsibilities include:
- assisting solicitors in hearings or consultations
- drafting legal documents
- helping with client communications
- preparing case files
- reviewing evidence.
What do you enjoy about your apprenticeship?
I enjoy being able to learn from real cases while building my legal knowledge. It’s fulfilling to see how much I’ve grown, both professionally and personally, since starting.
The apprenticeship constantly pushes me to develop skills like:
- attention to detail
- communication
- problem solving.
I also enjoy being part of a supportive team that genuinely wants to see me succeed.
What are the challenges?
Balancing work, study and personal life can be challenging at times. There are moments when deadlines from both sides collide, but planning ahead and staying disciplined helps.
Another challenge is adapting to new legal areas, but that’s also one of the best parts - it keeps me learning and improving.

All of these skills will help you balance work and study and build confidence in your abilities.
What are your career ambitions?
My goal is to qualify as a solicitor and specialise in:
- contract
- employment
- family
- immigration law.
These areas interest me because they involve working closely with people and making a positive impact on their lives.
In the long term, I’d love to progress into a senior position where I can mentor other apprentices and give back to the profession.
What advice can you give to other aspiring apprentices?
- Be consistent and proactive. Don’t wait for opportunities, create them. Ask questions, volunteer for new tasks and show interest in learning.
- Stay organised. Balancing study and work take discipline. Plan your week, set small goals and celebrate progress.
- Build your network. Connect with mentors, colleagues and other apprentices. Having a support system makes the journey much easier.
- Believe in yourself. You’ll face challenges, but every experience builds resilience. Keep your end goal in mind and stay motivated.
