Quantity surveyor apprentice - Matthew Farrow

Matthew is currently an apprentice at Gleeds studying for a BSc (Hons) in Quantity Surveying (Chartered Surveyor) at the University of Lancashire

What qualifications do you currently hold?

I have A-levels in English Language, Business Studies, and Sports Science. In addition, I have a first aid qualification with St John Ambulance, which allows me to wear a green lanyard and hardhat on-site as a trusted first aider.

Why did you decide to do an apprenticeship in this area?

I completed a Level 4 Sales Executive Apprenticeship, where I became fascinated by construction technology and design after visiting major construction sites across Manchester. This experience inspired my interest in the built environment and helped me realise that I wanted a more hands-on role.

I discovered quantity surveying, applied for several apprenticeships, and was thrilled to secure my first-choice position with Gleeds.

Did you need any previous experience in surveying before starting your apprenticeship?

No previous experience was required, which is one of the great benefits of apprenticeships. However, my year in the construction industry helped me stand out during the application process. Although my background was in sales, the transferable skills I developed proved valuable as I transitioned into quantity surveying.

How did you find and apply for your apprenticeship?

I discovered my Gleeds apprenticeship through UCAS, but after not hearing back for a few weeks, I contacted the recruitment team directly. I then learned the original role had been cancelled, but my proactive approach led to me being considered for another apprenticeship opportunity. After completing a presentation and an interview, I was offered the position two weeks later.

This experience taught me the importance of being proactive and reaching out to employers - persistence can open unexpected doors.

How does the apprenticeship work?

As part of my apprenticeship I attend university one day a week and spend the remaining four days working with Gleeds. The course is RICS-accredited, meaning that in the fourth year of my five-year programme, I will begin working towards my RICS Chartership Qualification - a globally recognised standard in the surveying profession.

I am currently working on behalf of Gleeds at Heathrow Airport, supporting a range of ongoing projects. Prior to this, I spent 11 months on the HS2 project, my first major project, which provided invaluable experience and a strong foundation for my career in quantity surveying.

What do you enjoy about your apprenticeship?

I enjoy the opportunity to work with some of the UK's largest and most influential clients on projects that will deliver long-term benefits to communities and the built environment. It's rewarding to know that the work I contribute to will have a lasting impact for years to come. I also take great satisfaction in helping others who are now in the position I once was, sharing advice and guidance on how to successfully secure an apprenticeship.

In addition, I really value gaining a deeper understanding of how businesses operate - from financial management to strategic planning and growth. This insight has given me a broader appreciation of the commercial side of the industry. Finally, I thoroughly enjoy the networking opportunities my role provides, meeting like-minded professionals, and being part of such a talented and supportive team at Gleeds.

What aspects do you find challenging?

One of the main challenges is balancing my time between work and study, especially while managing deadlines for both university and live projects. Another challenge is the constant learning that comes with the role, as there's always more to understand and develop. Each project also presents its own unique challenges and client requirements, which can be demanding but ultimately makes the work engaging and rewarding.

What are your biggest achievements so far?

My biggest achievements include assisting in planning and running work experience weeks for students, helping many early careers individuals find their path into the industry, just as I once did. In my role, I've supported key business operations and had the privilege of working on major frameworks such as Heathrow Airport and HS2, both of which have provided invaluable experience and professional growth.

What are your plans for after your apprenticeship?

After completing my apprenticeship, I plan to continue my career with Gleeds, working towards further promotions and expanding my project portfolio across different sectors. I aim to use my qualifications and experience to take on new opportunities and greater responsibilities within the business.

In the longer term, I hope to work abroad to gain international experience, and I am also exploring the possibility of starting my own business or side hustle to further develop my professional skills and entrepreneurial ambitions.

Do you have any advice for those considering a quantity surveying apprenticeship?

  • Say yes to any opportunities for growth, as each experience will help you develop valuable skills.
  • Be proactive in seeking information, asking questions, and getting involved in different projects.
  • Make sure you are genuinely passionate about the profession, as enthusiasm and dedication go a long way.
  • Be yourself and don't be afraid to demonstrate your personality and abilities, as employers value authenticity and initiative just as much as technical skills.
  • Learn Excel. The more formulas, shortcuts, and pivot tables you know, the more you’ll thank yourself later.
