Why did you decide to do a project management apprenticeship?
I always knew I didn’t want to go down the traditional university route but I liked the idea of an apprenticeship in project management.
Did you need any previous experience in project management before starting your apprenticeship?
Not specifically project management, however work experience at some level will be needed. I did work experience at two marketing agencies, a HR company and I worked part time for three years at a gastropub. This experience was very insightful, not only for my application, but also for me to understand if I wanted to work in a corporate office.
How did you find and apply for your apprenticeship?
Looking for an apprenticeship was difficult as my sixth form did not promote apprenticeships as an option. I researched on websites such as Indeed continuously, as apprenticeships are offered throughout the year. There isn’t a specific time frame that all single apprenticeships are released unlike university. I typed into Google the location I wanted to work in and the job role almost every week to see what was being offered.
How does the apprenticeship work?
I have one virtual learning day every week and then every 10 weeks I go to the university in person for a two-day day workshop. The rest of my week I am in the office, working from home or on site. This gives me lots of variation in my week which I enjoy.
What do you most enjoy about your apprenticeship?
I enjoy the work side more than the academic side as it’s more hands on. With my job I go on site, and I really enjoy looking at the project I am working on in real life, instead of just through a screen to see the progress. This makes you feel like the work you are doing in the office pays off.
What aspects do you find challenging?
I found it challenging moving into a new environment as I am from a hospitality background, so going into a corporate office was a big change, however I have settled in quickly. Using new technologies is challenging but it becomes muscle memory after using it for a while.
What are your biggest achievements so far?
My biggest achievement is doing a presentation to my line manager and senior colleague in my fourth week of working at the company. This was a daunting experience but helped with my presentation skills. I received positive feedback, which has built my confidence.
What are your plans for after your apprenticeship?
I aspire to be chartered to support my career progression in project management. My goal is to be promoted to a graduate at Gleeds.
Do you have any advice for those considering a project manager apprenticeship?
Go for it if you are ambitious and hardworking. If you don’t know what you want to do consider all your options not just the university route.
